District 16 Annual Meeting Red Deer, February 27, 2010

Minutes read from last year:

Edmonton complained about buoys.   Calgary to fix.

Open Class Monos needed because of lack of larger boats.

Calgary asking Edmonton to buy motor for the retrieve boat.

Edmonton may build a stand.

Calgary adding gravel to pit area

Pay before you play.  Lots of missing entry fees.

Entries in Wednesday, Classes to run by Thursday

Calgary buying plugs again.

Fuel still available from Doug

Scale class high points trophy funded

Scale trophies will be available for every race.

Classic unlimited has enough boats.

Registration not allowed for identical boats.   Some lattitude on this for new people.

Duplicate boats discouraged but if they are in the same race, they should be in separate heats.

Discussion over missing parts from scales.   Boats missing parts not due to driver error can continue to run.

Red Deer looking at a Lacombe gravel pit to run in.

High points patches handed out.

End.......

Old Buisness:

Calgary will be building new buoy floats with a similar design to Edmonton.   They will float all the time and the pin will stick up.   The pin is made of PVC pipe so it should not cause much damage.   Al Hobbs says he has no problems as he does not hit buoys.

Richard says they use pop bottles but they are not the right colour for offical purposes nor will the stand up in the long term to abuse.

Not many B and C Monos yet.   Probably still run them in an open class.  Register your Monos and the B and C's will be thrown together if they don't have enough to run their own offical class.   Let the CD know if you want to run Open mono if the class does not run.   The Thursday night e-mail will let everyone know what's running.

Edmonton was not able to get clearance to use a gas motor.   They have bought a new retrieve boat and are looking into a more powerful electric motor to make retrieving boats faster.   Calgary says life jackets are required in the retrieve boat or it's a $200 fine potential.   Boat operating certificates are also required to operate.   Brian Tooms has looked into running an exam for several people at a time at a meeting.

Entries system worked OK last year.

Scale classes.....Paul is out of town.   Assume no changes.   Remember to register your scale before the season starts.

Classic scale will run on Saturdays when available.

Andrew Ellwood is keeping a list of boats and frequencies we run.   Please update him with your boats you plan to run this year.

Red Deer was running on a lake that turns out to be private property.   A gravel company is leasing the land and they currently control access.   Al has information on the gravel company that is leasing the gravel pit.   Al will help Richard out with contacts.  Richard Sacher will try to get in touch with the company.   The County has a lake nearby but it is a bit too small and hard to get at.      The gravel pit has moved to a different area so the pond is open to use.   Having NAMBA insurance may give the gravel company some comfort over using the pond for boats.   All drivers will have to have NAMBA insurance.   4 or 5 guys are interested in running boats from the Red Deer area.

New Business:

NAMBA Nats June 12 to 19 this year just outside of New Orleans.

Edmonton report:

The Vegas class is new this year.   Should we break it up through the day to keep new people that have them around the pond longer?   Al thinks we need to run in the middle of the day as a regular class.   Try to use the class to get new people involved with the races.   We will pair up a new guy with an experienced racer to pit.   This may lead to the new people taking more interest and return the favour by helping others pit.   Brian Toombs asking about using fast electrics as well.   If somebody shows up with them, there's no reason not to let them run for fun.  Maybe they can orgainze better.    Edmonton has had a lot of guys interested but they don't want to race.    Some people take a while to get interested in racing instead of playing around.   We have to make sure that if they race, they need to register and pay their SEM or NAMBA fees.   Only one SEM allowed before they have to go to a NAMBA membership.  We need to make sure we are "ambassadors" of the hobby and we need to be friendly and supportive.   Richard is very helpful to many of the guys in Red Deer and that seems to generate interest.

Calgary report

Some concern: over NAMBA decription of counting laps.   Alan Yeun is concerned with the recent change/clarification to the race format.   Laps are not counted until the boat makes at least one clean lap.   We have been counting all laps and keeping track of penalties.   Al says Districts can make up a different way to handle it.   Consensus is we keep our existing method.   Discussion around cutting in and back out the same point on the course and if it counts as a penalty.  Rob says he would count it as a lap penalty.

Doug broached the topic of having mufflers on all boats.   The rule is db and maybe some small boats can get away with it.  The db is the best way to enforce it but logic should be used as well.   Calgary will set up a pond rules everyone will sign to get a combination to our lock.   This may prevent problems if users that are not club members are using the site and we can show the City that club members will abide by the rules.  Outsiders are not our responsibility.

Brad asked if Calgary can install a railing up the steps.   Calgary can probably do it with little problem.

Richard asked about race fees.  Same as last year. $7 per entry.

Race Dates:

Calgary  May 1 2

Edmonton May 14 16

Calgary May 29 30

Edmonton June 5 6

Calgary June 26 27

Edmonton July 17 18

Edmonton Sept 4 5

Calgary Sept 18 19 or move the Calgary race to Kalispel     Have to see what the weather is like.

Al says we made need fire extingushers in the pits, recovery boat and  drivers stand.   For gas boats one will be required at every pit table.  No accidents yet but it’s better to have preventative measures in place.

NAMBA may allow twin gas riggers.

Fuel will be available from Doug and at similar prices to last year.

High points awards:

Alan Y  A B C Hydros

Kevin T A Mono Sport  40 B Hydro

Mike Lakusta Scale.

Rob will look into jackets for the District.

CALGARY, June 27/28 Columbia Cup - by Doug Sick

It was a great weekend. It was blowing hard around here on Thursday and Friday then it died off for Saturday. Temperatures were in the low 20's so it was very pleasant. Too bad the attendance was a bit skinny.

A-mono was a fight between Kevin and Fons. That'll teach Kevin for working on Fons's engine.

The Classic Scales ran for the first time here. Cool. Some of them go pretty good and some need some work. Isn't that always the case.

C-hydro saw the debut of a bright day-glow green boat by Alan. The latest in a string of Alan boats. Went well and finished consistently. The rest, not so good. Al Hobbs brought out a new C Hydro but it was having teething problems.

New this year to the racing is Louis Belzil. He opened with A-Mono on Saturday and finished with X-Hydro on Sunday. Still learning about the long string of rules we forget to tell everyone the first time you race. He's picking up on it fast.

Sunday started out pretty good but the wind whipped up by noon. B-hydro went off OK but there were so many mechanical problems, the racing was a bit thin for the spectators.

Dan's B-Hydro rolled in turn 3 followed closely by Al Hobbs who promptly cleaned off everthing above the water line. Dan is now in the market for a new .45 pipe.

Sport 40 had some problems with the rough water. Keith blew off in turn three in his first heat but in the process of rolling over, Kevin tagged him on the leading edge of the tunnel and split open the hull. He's got 6 weeks to get it fixed. Not so easy for fibreglass hulls.

Moving on to Scale, they ran in the rough. Kevin's Winston Lobster ran great in the rough and seemed to like it. Why he insists on working on the Circus Canard is a mystery. I guess he enjoys the challenge.

Last was the X-Hydros and by then the wind had shifted to the north/north-east so we had some protection from the trees. Some fast boats....! Kevin dominated in speed but not so with consitancy. Al Hobbs was very consitant and finished all his heats so he came out on top.

So that's it for the first half. Next race is in Edmonton August 22 and 23. I won't be there but have fun all of you.

Doug

EDMONTON, May 23/24 Seafair Cup - by Rob Duckering

Once again, great weather for model boat racing. Some good racing and thanks to those who came to the race. There were a couple of firsts at this race, Paul had the newly refurbished Supertest III at the race and it was christened and ran well finishing with 650 pts in third place. Kind of gets everyone excited about running those classic scales now..... Al Hobbs had the new Timex and it too ran well and was at times a hand full. This was also the first victory for Kevin Trabouley with the 89 Winston Eagle lobster boat and he did it with a perfect 1600 pts. Congrats Kevin on winning the 2009 Seafair cup.
There are added pics to the 2009 link on the website and more pics of the Supertest can be found by clicking here...

Calgary Race Report - by Rob Duckering

Awesome weather!!!!! I hope it continues as Calgary had 2 days of the best weather and race conditions that they have had in a while. Good turn out of boats and drivers. I'm not sure of the points or where guys finished as the points have not come out yet. There were a number of new boats and lots of the old ones too. Kevin Trabouley had a new to him 1989 Winston Eagle lobster boat in scale that ran well. Some bugs to work out but it looks promising. Alan Yuen had a new Mutt II sport 40 which also had a few issues but I'm sure it will be running good soon. Keith and Rob had new A-opc's called VS1's with OS max engines that ran pretty good for the first time out. Next race is May 23/24 in Edmonton and see you all there.....

Back from a long, long winter...

2009 Schedule posted

Minutes from the NAMBA District 16 meeting, Red Deer, March 7, 2009 1:30 PM:

Keith Warham chairing the meeting in place of District Director Rod Duckering.
Kevin Traboulay representing Calgary,
Fonz Runco representing Edmonton.

Read the minutes from the 2008 meeting. Mintues moved adopted by Al Hobbs, seconded Brian Jessup.

Keith inquired about getting some new district shirts made up. New ones are available at in red or white at $31.95 with a 12 minimum order.
If anybody wants shirts, contact Rob Duckering.

Races went pretty well last year. Most went off except for one day in Calgary where we lost all the races for the day and one in Edmonton where we were able to pick up missing classes the next day.

Keith Warham reports that Al Waters says hi from NAMBA. He says to remember to keep things safe. Still would like to see the Nationals come back to Canada some day.

Edmonton report:
Edmonton club is questioning the hardness of the Calgary buoys. Two boats from Edmonton were damaged after hitting the buoys at the last Calgary race. One was damaged by a hit and the other hit the rocks after shearing the rudder following an encounter with the buoys. The buoys are the same as used in Edmonton but the method of holding them may be the problem. The buoys may stuck on to the peg too hard and will not release as easy. Calgary will endeavor to not install the buoys as hard on the pegs to make the floats come off easier.

Bruce Blackett asking if there will be B and C Mono’s this year. It does not appear that there will be many in the district. Probably will run any that are available in open class. A Monos at the last race in Calgary entered the open class and it went well. Only 2 B mono’s in the district so far and maybe the same for C.

Keith has looked at plugs for next year; $3.72 US each which works out to approx $4.87Cdn or $60 C per card. Al will get a price for K&B plugs. He has orders for 2000 so far so his prices should be good. He did not have exact pricing available as yet.

Fuel will be available for next year, See Doug. Prices have increased about $2/gallon due mainly to US exchange not being as good.

Calgary is requesting Edmonton look into buying a motor for the retrieve boat. Fonz believes they can use a 4 stroke engine but the cost is high. Fonz will check with their City powers to see what their objection to power engines is. Calgary found it was the potential for gasoline spills in the water. Once Calgary sorted out the issue with the City and promised not to refuel at the pond, the motor was allowed. Two stroke oils shouldn’t be a problem as they are certified for use in water environments.
Edmonton is also looking at the possibility of building a driving platform at the pond. Approaching the city to see what would be acceptable.

Calgary will be adding some gravel to the launch area to make it safer and bigger. Edmonton should do the same. The will look into the situation.

Fee paying is a continuing problem. Please remember to bring cash or cheque to pay fees before you run. The CD’s will try to collect before the racing begins.

As in previous years, racers need to get their entries in by Wednesday evening by e-mail or by phone. The classes that will be running will be sent out Thursday to the participants. If changes to the days the classes are running are required, they are to be negotiated by the class on Thursday and then inform the CD so he can publish the classes and participants for distribution to everyone. Al Hobbs requested a confirmation by Thursday night on whether the races will go ahead. He and others need to know so that travel plans can be made.

Paul Omerzu reports on the Scale classes;

A high point trophy for will be set up for drivers and another for boats. Driver points will be accumulated the same as the normal ones. He’s considering a different level for boats. Trophies have been acquired and are ready to go. This trophy system will accommodate racers with more than one boat. Classic Unlimited appears to have enough boats to run. The proposal is to run them on Saturday. The Classic Class will be round nose only. Classic Unlimited with 23 cc gas motors is getting some interest in the US but not in our district yet.

Paul will have the high points named the Roger Newton Memorial in honor of the late Roger Newton.

Registrations for scales; past rules tried to restrict two boats in the same district but that was not hard and fast. Do we want to enforce the rule? It sounds like the consensus is to try to avoid two identical boats where possible. Exceptions may be made if somebody moves in to the area. Time will be given to change the paint scheme to come up with a different boat. The issue is both safety and an attempt to get as many different boats out there as possible. The decision on enforcement will be left to the discretion of the Scale Director. We don’t want to shut down new interest by turning away duplicate boats. If somebody is asking what they can run, duplicate boats should not be allowed. If duplicate boats do show up at a race and there are enough boats, the duplicates should be split into separate heats as if they had the same frequency.

There was a long, long discussion about parts lost off of a scale during a race. If something falls off by itself, the boat finishes with 6 place points. If it falls off in an accident, there is no penalty. Boats finishing behind the penalized boat will not advance in their finishing place.

What happens with parts that can’t be fitted back on for the next heat? Running without a cowling can make the boat much faster so lost parts can be an advantage. Allowances may be for minor parts like winglets, rear wings. Ultimately, a boat should not be allowed to launch with a cowl missing. Parts that appear to always fall off during a race to giving an advantage will have investigated and ruled upon. Paul will clarify how the rules are to be interpreted and post the results on the website.

After more long discussion, it was determined so long as the boat is ready to run at the start of the race, parts lost due to accidents not the fault of the driver, can continue to race with missing parts. If the part is broken or lost due to driver error, they can run but only get 6 place points.
Only one scale boat has registered for 2009 so far. Keith has forms available.

Red Deer report:
Richard Sacher says they have been playing mostly. Not many interested in racing yet. They are looking at running out of an old Lacombe gravel pit for now. They are working with the county to find a way for them to run and not mix with other users. Lacombe is spending a lot of money on restoring the pit and would like to see people using it. It may take a few years to get organized but they would like to run a race with Calgary and Edmonton help. Making them aware of our insurance and organization may give them comfort that we are legitimate users.

Richard has been playing with a modified .47 GMS engine in a Wave Slave and they go OK. It’s a cheap alternative to the current racing engines and it goes fast enough to be fun. Not an exactly legal class but it could be a special class if they have enough racers.

Race dates for 2009 were reviewed and set:

May 2/3 Calgary
May 23/24 Edmonton
June 6/7 Calgary
June 20/21 Edmonton
June 27/28 Calgary
Aug 22/23 Edmonton
Sept 5/6 Edmonton
Crazy Al’s Classique Sept 18 19 20
Oct 3/4 Calgary

High Points awards for 2008 were presented:

October 4 & 5 Race Report - by Doug Sick

Maple Leaf Regatta - Calgary, Alberta

The last race in Calgary was mixed. We had a good turn out but the weather was not the best.  It was cloudy and a bit wet on Saturday but the racing was really good.  A few boats got schmucked on the rocks, some radio and some just did not have room to slow down after discovering their boat would not turn.  We started OK on Sunday, running off a the A-OPC and B-Hydro but by the time we finished B-Hydro, the NW winds had kicked up and everything when to heck.  A couple of heats of scale convinced us that the waves were just not going to go away so we scrapped the X-Hydro and the rest of the year went with it.

My brother took a bunch of good photos and he has posted them on the web. Have a look at http://gallery.me.com/gordonsick#100133.
Even have Al Hobb's boat in mid air as it hit the rocks. Cruel but cool.  You can download any of the pictures that interest you.

Doug.

Calgary Race Summary Report - by Doug Sick:

The weekend turned out just great. The pond was absolutely laid flat for both days. It was a bit chilly in the mornings but that quickly went away.

I have updated our Calgary records as well. No less than five new records were set this last weekend, four by Rob Duckering and one by Alan Yuen. That was a testament to how good the water was and how well everyone has everything running at this time of the year.

I notice that the Scale and X-Hydro records still remain open at the NAMBA level. I think they need to be applied for at the race as witnesses are required. Think about it for the next race. I believe Keith has the forms.

Gold Cup race report - by Rob Duckering:

Well, another Gold Cup race done and gone, but not just any Gold Cup....This one had a special meaning to it. It was hard not to notice. Anyone who knows anything or even just a little about R/C Unlimiteds knew of the special meaning and therefore the dedication of this race to the father of R/C unlimiteds who passed away recently...Roger Newton..."The Czar" as he was affectionatly known in the model boat racing world. Paul ran the decal 'The Czar' on the Cellular one and kept a picture of Roger and David Newton holding a scale in the pits.

There were 8 entries for this race, one of the biggest turn-outs for a scale race for quite some time in district 16. Paul and Mike recently ran their boats down in the Tri-Cities area for the mini Columbia cup where Paul made the final finishing fifth overall and Mike winning the second consolation. They had their boats running as fast as I've seen them with Paul now powering the Cellular one with a Mac 67.

The Gold cup always means consistency and on this day there were only 2 boats that finished all 4 heats. One of them was Martin from British Columbia running the 88 Miller High life with a first, a second and 2 thirds for 1150 points, good for second overall. Paul and the 87 Cellular-One did a little better with 3 firsts and a second, good for 1500 points. Mike with his 87 Miller American managed 1125 points which was good for third place. So, it was only fitting that Paul would win the Gold cup which by the way was the first Gold cup win for the Cellular One, and as Roger was a great personal friend of Paul's therefore made the win even more special.  Finishing fourth was Keith Warham and the Bud with Rob and the Miss US fifth, Dave and the Pak... 6th, Les and the Prodelco 7th and Dan and his circus in 8th.

All in all, a great race, no real mishaps and I'm sure, a lot of fun to watch.

President's Cup Race Report by Rob Duckering:

The Presidents cup race in Edmonton was much the same as Calgary's first race with low attendance. Not sure if that was due to the holiday long weekend or the Namba nationals and people not wanting to damage their boats or a combination of both. In any case, the weather was hot with temperatures around 30 degrees and water conditions very nice, especially on Sunday with very little wind.

A-mono was won by Rob and his CMB powered Speedmaster with 1600 points. A-hydro was won by Alan Yuen with 1200 points. Open mono was won by Andrew with 1225 who was on a run for a perfect 1600, but in the 4th heat the Seaducer made a big splash in turn 3 and disappeared under the water. Sport 40 was run for the first time with Rob taking first with his Mutt II powered by a CMB 45RS with 1500. C-Hydro was won by Rob with 1225 points but actually tied with Kevin but won because of a faster time in a heat.

Sunday saw the scales come out but before that we ran B-mono where Alan Yuen has his Seaducer with CMB power running strong and ready for the nationals with a solid 1600 points. B-hydro was next and was won by Alan Yuen with 1425 points with Kevin second and Dan third. Next was scale with Rob winning three heats with the 1974 Miss US and Mike (Miller American) second with Paul third running the Cellular One and Les fourth with the Prodelco, then Dan with his Circus rounding out the field. There was some close racing again with heat 4 shaping up to be a barn burner but Paul went dead in the backstretch when leading with Mike and Rob coming fast until Rob flamed out and Mike turned left to avoid Paul's dead boat and spun out out much like Calgary in the final heat. The Presidents cup went to the Miss US. The final class saw X-hydro hit the water and this is where the retrieve boat got its work-out. Up till then we had 7 consecutive heats in B-mono and B-hydro without retrieval. X-hydro was finally won by Kevin with a whopping 800 points.

Now there is a 6 week break with the next race occurring in Edmonton on August 16-17 which is the Silver cup followed by the Gold cup on Aug 30-31. Repair those boats and ready your engines for the second half of the season as there are lots of classes still up for grabs in the year long best 6 race point total.

R/C Unlimited report from Calgary

  - by Rob Duckering:

Well, If you missed the race in Calgary, you missed great weather and nice race conditions.

The scale class was down on entries to 4 boats but the quality of racing was very good. Heat #1 was a feeling out heat with Rob doing a little more testing in the morning on the Miss US and hit the line full out and took the win, with Mike second and Paul third. Les failed to start.

Heat #2 was a little closer with Mike and Paul starting to dial their boats in but the end Miss US took the win.

Heat #3 was a different story as Mike had the Miller with CMB power dialed in and ran away with the win with Rob in second and Paul third. Les and the Prodelco had a few buoy issues but managed to get it back to the pits unscathed.

Heat #4 started out as the best heat so far, Paul hitting the line with the Cellular One in lane 2 with Rob in lane 4 and Mike and the Miller just behind in lane 6. This heat had the makings of a great race. Paul drove the Cellular in lane 1-2 for the first lap with Rob and the Miss Us just on the outside and waiting to pounce. Mike was coming on fast. All boats hit turn 1-2 on lap 3 with Paul on the inside, Rob in lane 4 and about even with Paul and as they rounded turn 2 Mike started to make his move going between the Cellular and the Miss US coming out of turn 2 with a drag race down the backstretch. Mike started to edge out in front and as turn 3-4 approached all 3 entered the corner. Paul was on the inside with Mike now in the middle and Rob on the outside. The Miss US started to slow down with a carb linkage failure thus taking it out while Paul gained back the lead coming out of turn 4 on lap 4. With the US now dead it was just a matter of Mike and the Miller just finishing the heat and the Columbia cup would be his. Going down the backstretch on lap 5, Paul had the lead with Mike charging fast but moving in ever so slightly on Paul headed for turn 3. Just before turn 3, Mike gave the Miller a little left turn resulting in a spin out with the Miller now upside down. Paul went on to the win and finished all 4 heats with 1075 points. Mike was third with 1025 points and Rob and the Miss US finished with 1125 points thus winning the 2008 Columbia cup.

There were 2 new boats at the race with keith bring out the 1959 Maverick to show. What an awesome boat. Nice job Keith on a boat built by Mike Kurz and finished by Keith. Also present was a new member, Dan Lemay from Airdrie and his son who had a Circus Circus. Dan is a former member and racer from Winnipeg so he is no stranger to boat racing. Maybe next race he will enter. Speaking of the next race, its in Edmonton for the Presidents cup on June 29. Expect to see a couple more scales at that race with Keith back to health and running the 2001 Budweiser and maybe even Dave Arsenault with the 1982 Pay N Pak. See ya there....

Race report from Doug Sick:

Well, we have two races under our belts already.
Calgary's race on May 4 was pretty good but sparsely attended. The weather was great although it was looking like it was going to blow early in the day, the wind calmed down and we had great water and temperatures.

Last weekends race in Edmonton was quite a different story. Lots more classes running but the wind was steady and relentless out of the NE on Saturday and Sunday. Fortunately, the lake is small enough that the waves never get to be impossible to handle, just a bit rough in turn 1. It made for some very interesting accidents in turn 1. Rob did a beautiful launch and barrel roll over Doug in turn one in the last heat of X hydro. Rob launched and went over Doug's boat which was turning into the corner. What a show. Many boats showed a flying tendency going into the wind on the back straights. The water was calmer but the wind was still present which added more and unexpected lift. Bruce proved that you can fly well in a mono as well as a hydro. Paul also kept up his flying skills in X Hydro, one time even coming down right side up and kept on going to a finish.

Patch up those boats and get them ready for June 14 and 15 in Calgary.  --Doug

Keith welcomed all and noted the sparse attendance. Good racing last year. Thanks to all who organized and put on the races. Keith will not need to collect district fees this year as there is enough in the account to cover projected expenses.

Paul had proposed modified mill pattern last year. It worked for quite a few races but we reverted back to the old pattern for the last couple of races. The question was put to all gathered as to what we want to do for this year. A comment was made that the modified mill pattern worked OK for Calgary due to additional room in the back straights that gave room to adjust speed. Edmonton does not have the additional space and therefor is a more of a problem. Bruce Blackett put forward a motion to return to the old mill pattern, seconded by Doug, passed by all present.

Note from Al Hobbs. Andy Brown is making .21 pistons for the MACS and is working on sleeves. Chroming is the current problem. Should see more variety of pistons and sleeves through the summer.

Nothing from Al Waters, NAMBA President. Keith reported he has said he would support a Nationals in Canada.

Kevin Traboulay delivered a report on Calgary. All races went off with little problem with the weather this year. Club attendance at meetings has not been so good lately. At the races, we would like more racers from Edmonton. Classes are not well filled out but the Hydros are well attended due to Calgary representation. Holding races in August are a problem due to Global Fest. The weeds presented more of an issue this year. Control is a problem. Chemical control with stuff like salt blocks is difficult due to the continuous movement of water through the lake. We would like to see more scale racers in Calgary, only two so far. Another person has shown up with a Circus Circus. Exact colours with scales like the Circus Circus is a problem. Pictures are sometimes not that accurate. Kevins Circus Circus colours are not exact . It came from IMBPA where they are not as fussy about the scale appearance. Paul has offered to look at any deals anybody brings forward when they looking when considering purchasing a scale from out of town. Many little details can put it on the wrong side of the NAMBA scale rules.

Fonz presented the report from Edmonton. Edmonton has had some problems but they are working through them. A request has been made to move AOPC to Sunday to allow one of their members to attend and make it a valid class. Also it would be good to move BOPC to Saturday for the same reason. The move will be made if it’s a matter of a class won’t run otherwise. Brian Jessup says the move should be worked out with the class participants and not the CD. Race entries must be in Wednesday evening to make this work so that we know who is entering. At the time the entries are submitted, the CD will be informed of any requests to move a class. If the class has enough to run as scheduled, it will stay as is. If there is a shortage of participants it will be up to the class participants to negotiate a change to the race schedule to make it work on the alternate day. The CD will be informed of the decision by Thursday evening so that the change can be transmitted to all concerned.

Race dates were reviewed and agreed to:

Calgary May 3, 4
Edmonton May 24, 25
Calgary June 14, 15
Edmonton June 28, 29
Nationals July 12 to 19
Edmonton Aug 9, 10
Edmonton Aug 30, 31
Calgary Sept 6, 7
Kalispel Classique International Sept 19 to 21
Calgary Oct 4, 5

Scale Report was delivered by Paul Omezu. Some good racing last year. Some problem has arisen with hull registrations. Paul reviewed the process. The first time a scale is registered is is $10 and it will be $10 for the second year if it is still under contsruction. The registration fee changes to $5 when the boat is ready to race. A question was posed as to how rigid should the rules be enforced? What things can be allowed to slide? Colour? Missing parts? Paul will have to make the decisions based on established NAMBA rules. Paul will have a permanent scale trophy made up for the Maple Leaf race this year.

Keith remined everyone to send in frequencies to Andrew Ellwood. Kevin mentioned the new Spectrum radios have been having some problems. It may be different with the models that have been modified by replacing the RF module in an existing radio. The radios spedifically designed for Spektrum may not have as much problem.

Fuel will be available from Doug. Prices are not available as yet. Glow Plugs from last years supply are still available from Keith.

Paul enquired about district shirts. Some newer people may not have them. Keith will look into cost and availability for smaller quantities.

Keith presented the yearly award patches. The only class champion present was Doug who won A Mono. .

District Directorship for 16 is coming up this year. Keith has elected to retire from the position after more than 20 years of service. A new director will be required. Contact Keith if you are interested.

Paul suggested some sort of award in memory of Mike Kurz who passed away this fall. Ideas to consider were fastest time, most spectacular schmuck up....both activities enjoyed by Mike. He will be missed by all for his fine work and years of building RC boats.

The meeting was closed at 3:15.

Sept 27, 2007 - Season points finalized - by Doug Sick

Hi there all. I finally have the all the results in and some of the old results corrected (follow the links in the menu on the right side of the page).

I have completed the race details, the Calgary Heat Racing records (two new ones from the last race) and a historical summary of NAMBA District 16 champions from the last 10 years (click here).

That's it for this year. Seems like it was just a short while ago we got things underway.

This is the first year in my memory (short as it is) that we ran off all the races on the days we planned and with no blow outs, floods, rain outs, freeze outs. If you wanted to race 8 times this year, you had the chance. If you didn't, that's your tough luck.

Unlike last year, there was a few classes that the best of 6 actually could be applied. It did not change any results however so there is no controversy.

Top gun award winner Rob Duckering

The top gun award was really cool. It consisted of 2 guys each running off in a heat, choose your best boat...elimination rounds.
The final came down to Bruce running his 84 powered rigger and Rob with his 67 rigger. Rob got the line on the inside and won.

The weather was great on the first 2 days and a little cloudy sunday but great water made for some great racing.
Thanks to Al for hosting another great race and for all those who helped out. For those who could not attend, you should really try and make this race sometime...it's alot of fun.

I hear next years race will have a new twist. Stay tuned...

Sept 1/2 Gold Cup report by Rob Duckering

The biggest race of the year.......18 entrants with about 60 boats. Some of the best racing of the year.....Also some of the biggest crashes of the year.
The Gold cup was one for the first time by Mike Lakusta driving the Miller American space boat. Second with a new Budweiser was Keith who survived with only a few scratches from an earlier incident. Third was Martin driving his Miller high life. Mike has scale locked up for the year while alot of the other classes will come down to the final race of the season in Calgary this upcoming weekend. Should be a good one.....

Sept 4, 2007

Rob has posted another video on the Videos page...R/C unlimited action from the Gold Cup on Sept 2nd.

There was also another record set during Open Mono...Andrew took 9 seconds off of the last record.  See the Edmonton section of the website for a complete list of the current class record holders.

Doug has already updated the district results for this year...thanks Doug!  Posted in the usual location.

May of you have been asking about the photos from this year's racing - the link above in green is where all of the pictures are being hosted.  If you have some that you want to post, please send them to Rob Duckering and he'll get them posted.

Aug 18/19 Silver cup race report by Rob Duckering

I woke up to wet streets and some light rain Saturday morning but to the south, clearer skies prevailed. When I arrived at the pond, it was dry and somewhat calm.

Racing started with A-opc which was run for the first time this year.....Only 3 entries though, so if you're reading this and have a 3.5 tunnel, you need to bring it out.  After this class we went to A-hydro which had 5 entries and some decent racing. No casualties either.....yet.

We then ran sport 20 for the first time in a couple years. Keith had his new Whiplash running well and won. Next up was sport 40 and more great racing. Rob had a very fast time of 1:27.53 which is not too far off the Namba record. C-hydro was the last class for Saturday and again more fast racing. 7 entries with Rob and Kevin tied for first with 1500 points and Kevin won with a faster time.

Sunday I woke to foggy conditions but no rain. Maybe the weathermen have foggy brains?  Anyway, no rain (and no wind) came at any point during Sundays action. We even set up extra canopies so maybe that helped to scare the rain gods. All the Calgary guys went home Saturday believing the weathermen, I suppose. Anyway, we had enough entries and people to run all the classes entered.

We started with A-mono and away we went. Alex and Fons had a few good tussles in this class after Brad had an altercation with the rocks in turn 4. As it turns out Alex won the class. He is starting to get the hang of this boating thing....  Then we went to B-opc and then to B-hydro. B-hydro had some freebies and Martin took full advantage turning a blistering 1: 08.50 in the second heat. He was all alone and the water was like glass. Way to go Martin! That's the new record at the Edmonton pond and only 4 seconds off the Namba record.

Scale was up next where there were 4 boats competing for the Silver Cup. There were a couple of close calls here and there and even Martin trying a left turn dodge that caused his Miller to bounce and explode on impact with the water. He was back in the next heat minus wings, etc but in the end Paul drove steady and fast to the win with Mike Lakusta's Cellular one with Mike in second with his Miller.

X-hydro had 3 entries and after a drive by or, pardon me drive over incident, Bruce got back in and won the class after the others could not continue. All in all, a good day that got better as it went along.

The next race is the Gold cup on the Labour day long weekend where there are a few people coming from Winnipeg as well as the rest of the gang so it looks to be a very good race for 2 days. See you all there.....

Rob

District Points and Calgary records have been updated.

Calgary Race (June 9/10) report - by Doug Sick

The June 9/10 Calgary race went pretty good for the most part. A good turnout made for some great racing. Saturday was great for racing. Calm water and not too hot. Sunday was another matter as it was fairly rough for most of the races. However, as luck would have it, by the time we had it all cleaned up, the wind died right down and the pond was in great shape. Keith ran his Bud scale boat for the first time and managed a respectable finish. As time goes on, it will improve as he figures out how it runs. Several new local records were set over the weekend. I have included those results as well as Edmonton's race records. Note that there are several NAMBA records that have opened up which can be applied if you wish. You have to do it at a sanctioned race and the proper forms can be obtained from Keith.

The Edmonton 23 race was a long one as we packed in two days of racing into one. The wind was a bit tricky for most of the day but it was not bad enough to have to shut down. The pond sized is ideal for windier days as the waves have trouble getting rolling.

See you all in Edmonton for the next race August 18.

June 24, 2007

Edmonton Race (June 23) Report - by Rob Duckering:

We decided to run all classes entered on Saturday...7 in all:
A-mono, A-hydro,sport 40, c-hydro, b-hydro,scale and x-hydro.

Weather was blustery with an occasional small shower.

Racing was good with the small amount of entries we had. Alan and Doug came from Calgary. Greg Wannamaker was back with a new C-hydro. Martin Lovsund from the north country. We even had a visit from long time boater and great friend Gerry Pinnsonneault.

Scale hydro saw Mike Lakusta win the Presidents cup. Mike has his Miller high life running very well right now. Paul's 1982 Atlas had one small run in with the shore-line rose garden but survived with only a few small scars, a thorn in the side and a bent driveline.

Good luck to Alan Yuen who will try his luck racing at the 2007 Namba nationals in California.

Next race is mid August in Edmonton for the Silver cup.
See you there....

Calgary Race Report - May 12/13 Race - by Doug Sick:

Great weather was had for the first race but we had limited entries and ran it off in one day. The second race, this last weekend also saw a great Saturday for racing. How uncharacteristic for Calgary, I must say.

The sun shone brightly and the wind came lightly out of all quarters. Just enough to make it interesting at times. We ran off 5 classes on Saturday. That night a cold front moved through and brought rain. It looked bad for the start but as everyone was arriving and setting up canopies, the rain stopped and it turned out to be just a bit chilly but not bad for racing. The unfortunate thing is we did not have enough help in the pits to be able to run off 4 boat heats. It would have been great but all we had was the racers for the day and Keith who ran the CD duties in spite of not having any boats to run. We had the three classes run off by just after 2 and we packed up for the journey home.

Can't say that we had anything spectacular at this race but in the first race, Alan Yeun did a real number on his X Hydro. There was not much left to salvage after he hit the rocks in turn 2. About all I saw that could be used was the servos and maybe the engine bearings. Yes, even the engine was shredded as it appears it took the brunt of the load slowing down the boat.

March 16, 2007

This year promises to be a very interesting racing season if the weather permits.  Mother Nature won most of the classes last year...

It's been a long time since I've seen this many new boats talked about in the region...Rob Duckering has added several to his fleet including an Eagle SG for B Hydro, a new Mutt II Sport 40, and a new scale.  Martin has also added a new RoadRunner Extreme for B Hydro.  Keith's new Miss Budwieser along with Paul's Supertest and Mike Kurz' Maverick should make the R/C Unlimited class even more interesting, and there are even more scales on the bench in a number of shops around the district.  Allan has replaced his Sport 40 with a Phil Thomas Stealth, Fons has an AC Pro Sport 40, and the list goes on...

If you're interested in seeing what guys are running this year - check out the frequencies page - and don't forget to send me confirmation of your frequencies for this year if you haven't already done so.

March 3, 2007

Minutes of the 2007 District Meeting in Red Deer:

Keith called meeting to order at 1:45 and made some opening comments.

Andrew read the minutes of the 2006 meeting.

Comments from the minutes - Dave credited Fons with creating the signs last year as his sign maker was not available to do the task.

Fons accepted the minutes, Bruce seconded.

Comments from District Director:

2006 was a challenge - weather was the issue.

City of Calgary has added large drainage pipes to keep the water level more stable at the Calgary pond which should make the Calgary race site available more quickly afer heavy rains.

Rule books were mailed last year, updates are posted on the Namba website.  Membership is advised to download the updates.

Awarding High points for the 2006 racing season was difficult because of the fact that there were too few races run. It was decided to use the best 4 races to determine high points.

Namba President Al Waters' comments: Thanks for the safe year, hope the weather is better for this year. Nats have been orgainized for the next four years...San Jose is the host for 2007.

Edmonton Report:

Dave reported on the Bonnie Doon Mall show...plenty of interest.

Rob initiated a discussion regarding the pictures...he will host, Andrew will link to them from the website.

Fons discussed the issues of the pond. We'll try to get a letter from the City to state that we have formal permission to use the pond. In general everything with the site is positive.

Paul brought up a discussion of mill pattern...revert back to the old version? Full course mill? A lively discussion ensued...

Paul moved that we move to a full course mill at the 30 second clock. No cutting in after the mill time horn sounds. In addition, we will run the full start time clock. Shawn seconded. Motion passed!

Paul brought up the discussion of rain dates...if a race is cancelled for any reason, it is cancelled not to be re-scheduled. Any completed classes points will be recorded.

Rob moved that there will be no re-scheduling of cancelled classes due to weather. Shawn seconded. Motion carried.

Rob brought up the issue of when a race is cancelled. If it is weather related, then the racers should be able to make their own decision to go to the race or not. If the CD or host club makes the decision to cancel, that must be done by 9pm Thursday prior to the race. Race registration must be done by 10pm on Wednesday.

Calgary Club news:

Doug is making fuel again this year. Using Klotz as the oil. Prices will be approx $1.00 more per gallon than last year. Contact Doug if you need fuel.

Calgary club purchased plugs this year. McCoy MC-9 plugs will cost approximately 4.00 per plug.

Calgary was concerned with limited weekends available. Discussion as to reducing the number of races to 3 weekends with 5 heats each. The proposed schedule was examined and another lively discussion ensued.  The results of the discussion was to shuffle a couple of the proposed dates, stick with the old format of 4 heats per class per race weekend and the schedule is posted below and on the schedule page of the web site:

Calgary - April 28/29
Calgary May 12/13
Edmonton - May 26/27
Calgary - Jun 9/10
Edmonton - Jun 23/24
Edmonton - August 18/19
Edmonton - September 1/2
Calgary - September 8/9

Bruce brought up the issue of the district lobbying for a smaller "no race time" around the NAMBA Nationals dates. District to persue a smaller window.

Paul - Scale Report...

Good results from last year, new boats for this year include Rob and Keith. Paul is looking for the results sheets for about 1995 'till 2003 or so. If you have a set of results, please forward them to Paul for the Scale classes.

Registration needs to be done each year regardless of the status.

Other items:

Keith brought up the frequency registration issues...please update Andrew as soon as you know.

Keith then awarded the 2006 High Points patches:

A Hydro - Rob Duckering
A Mono - Doug Sick
B Mono - Allan Yuen
C Hydro - Doug Sick
X Hydro - Rob Duckering
R/C Unlimited - Martin Lovsund.

Meeting adjourned by Paul at 3:11pm
Seconded by Rob.

June 28, 2006 - Edmonton Race Report

 - by Rob Duckering

Finally some nice weather. 27 degrees and sunny. Wind, not a factor.

We ran the usual A and C classes on Saturday. Sunday, the usual B and X classes with A and C hydro from a previous race added in.

Scale saw the return of Dave Arsenault with the 1982 Pay N'Pak. It ran like it never missed a race. Paul ran his 82 Atlas, Alan Yuen had his 82 Executone, Mike Lakusta brought out the Cellular one, Martin Lovsund ran his 88 Miller and Rob Duckering raced his 74 Miss US. Les Akre and the 82 Prodelco sat this one out.

All the heats saw some exciting, close racing with Paul and Rob hitting the finish line in heat one together. It was almost a photo finish and the closest finish ever.

At the end there were 4 boats all tied with 1225 points. Dave, Martin, Paul and Rob. This one would have to be decided on heat times. So, Rob got first with a 1:41, Dave second with 1:43, Paul third with 1:43.5 and Martin fourth with a best of 1:45. Talk about close racing.....

Thanks to all those who helped make it all happen and especially Fons who was the contest director for the majority of the race.

See ya in August in Edmonton for the Silver cup.

Thanks to Rob and Doug for the following pictures:

May 29, 2006 - Calgary Scale Report: Rob Duckering

Sport 40 did not run and Scale Unlimited had 5 entries.
Paul and the 82 Atlas, Rob with the 74 Miss US, Al Hobbs and his Gilmore Special, Alan Yuen and his new to him 82 Executone and Les Akre with his 82 Miss Prodelco. Hey, its almost an 1982 tribute race!

As it was there was some good racing with Paul and Rob hitting the finish line a mere 3 feet apart in 1 heat with Paul taking the win and the Thunderboat cup at the same time.

Overall, the weather was great with some good heats and fast times with very few incidents for the first race of the year. Check out the standings for the points race for the year.

May 29, 2006 - Calgary Race Report:  By Doug Sick

It was typical for the first race of the season, a bit sparse on the attendance but for once the weather co-operated, albeit one week later that originally scheduled. The first attempt was cancelled do to a forecast of high winds. Given all the traveling, it was decided not to even attempt the race with the forecasted winds. Good thing, they were right. The weather turned out clear and fairly warm with a little wind out of the North, then the South then the East. It could not make up it's mind.

We were able to race all four hydro classes, A OPC, A Mono and R/C Scale in one day. We were finished about 5. As you can see, the points were a bit lower than expected due to numerous mechanical difficulties may people were still working out.

Surprisingly, in spite of the early start, 3 new Elliston Lake records were set. The record summary is also attached for those who are interested. Most of the new records were bested by sever seconds. X Hydro is now down to 1:07 which is a very fast time. Congratulations Kevin.

I think there are enough boats still in running condition to make a good run at the up coming Edmonton Race. See you all there.

Feb 25, 2006

Minutes of the Red Deer Regional meeting:

Meeting called to order at 1:50pm by Keith Warham

Minutes of the 2005 meeting were read by Kevin - accepted by:  Rob D

seconded by: Bruce Blackett

Comments from Keith Warham:

Issues from the minutes:  Keith's supplier of shirts in Calgary changed the prices, Keith has changed back to the supplier in Edmonton.

Keith thanked the newsletter contributors from last year, and encouraged participation this year.

The Namba rulebook has been re-done and is destined to be sent to the printer - everyone should have a copy later this year.

Question regarding high points shirts:  It's become a problem with the suppliers and logistics.  Discussion ensued:  Kyle suggested Chairs instead of shirts - seems to be well accepted.

Comments from Al Waters - the current NAMBA president:  Keith read current president's comments.  Safety was his primary concern.  Public perception is paramount.

Keith thanked Al for his past participation in NAMBA's executive and his participation in or district's events.

Edmonton's issues:

Engine started at the 2 minute horn in order to speed up race day.

Edmonton will re-org the pit area for increased visibility for the CD and a more specific area for setting up the starting tables - and requested that Calgary do simalarly at their site.  A discussion ensued - and it was generally agreed that we will make the pit areas in both locations more structured and roped off from the general public.

Dave Arsenault has volunteered to arrange for the creation of signs to keep the general public out of the pit area.

Calgary issues:

Calgary will add more gravel to their launch area

Race Date discussion:  results of the discussion posted here...

R/C Unlimited report - from Paul Omerzu:

Great turn out last year.  This year promises to be even better with the return of Dave Arsenault and Greg Wannamaker.  Alan Yuen and Les have also got scales for this year.

All Scales must have their Namba # on the boat - 1/4" numbers are sufficient.  On the transom is an acceptable location.

All boats within the district must be registered with Paul in order to avoid conflicts.  The registration forms are on the web site.  Two categories - development and competition status.

Any scale hulls should meet the scale rules in the district.  This applies to existing and new hulls, along with purchases of already built hulls from other districts.

Rob proposed that we run Classic scale - roundnose hulls - on Saturdays in Edmonton and Calgary. Seconded by Russ Engleman - passed.  Supplemental rules for this class are posted in the scale section of the website - found here...

Discussion from the floor:

Rob proposed a levy of 1.00 per entry be sent to the District Director to cover the costs of the chairs for high points. Les seconded - motion carried.

Al will host a race on September 22 - 24, 2005 - the host hotel will be the North 40 resort in Kalispel.

Insurance with the same carrier this year - and Al has negotiated the same rate as last year.  That's 13 years in a row without an increase in fees.

Keith awarded the High points shirts for the 2005 racing season:

Rob - A OPC and C Hydro

Alan - B Hydro and B Mono

Doug Sick - A Mono and X Hydro

Brian Jessup - A Hydro

Paul Omerzu - R/C Unlimited

Keith Warham - B OPC, Sport 40 and Sport 21

Andrew Ellwood - C Mono and Open Mono

Meeting adjourned at 3:13pm.

Year End Report:

by Keith Warham

Boating in District 16 has concluded with the last race of the year being completed Oct. 1 & 2 under some cool conditions.
Testing began in early April this year when the water finally thawed out. The first race in the District was in Calgary on May 15 & 16 with some excellent early season heats.

The schedule then move to Edmonton and to their new pond on May 28 & 29 and again on June 11 & 12. Both these races produced some fun heats and a couple of very close finishes. The weather was good for both races. These two races saw "A" OPC being run for the first time in several year. Also run for the first time ever was Sport 21, G2 and GX2 gas mono's. These new classes showed a lot of interest from those in attendance. The new pond in Edmonton proved to be much better than the old Kirk Lake site and with a bit of fixing up for next year it should be a plus for them as there is lots of exposure to the public and prospects for new members.

The next scheduled race moved back to Calgary on June 26 & 27 and once again there was more super racing and close finishes. District points were beginning to get real close. The weather again was excellent.

There is no scheduled races during July and the early part of August due to the NAMBA Nats and the fact a lot of members take vacation during this time of summer.

The final two Edmonton races were run August 20 & 21 and Sept 3 & 4. The August race was hot and racing was as hot as the weather with some exciting back and forth fights for first place in most heats. The Sept, race started off good on Saturday but on Sunday old mother nature decided to give us a bit of unwanted rain so after the completion of two classes the balance had to be cancelled with the balance of the classes to be completed at the next race in Calgary.

The next scheduled race in Calgary had to be cancelled due to of all things, high water levels for a storm earlier in the week. It was once again decided to complete both the balance of the Edmonton races and the Calgary cancelled race on the final race of the year Oct. 1 & 2. This race would be the last chance to compete for High points and most classes were wide open for some upsets.
The final race started off late as the wind was blowing hard and the water was to rough. However after some patience and determination and a long day most of the larger boat classes that could handle the smaller waves were completed leaving the smaller "A" classes to be run the next day.
The next day started off on time with much better conditions but some what cold temperatures. All the classes were finally completed on another long day with many upsets in the final point standing due to DNF's and hotly contested heats.

The year for the most part was very enjoyable and the races were fun to attend meeting new and old friends.Congratulations to all those who participated and to all the High Point winners. The High point have been calculated and can be view on the District Web site.

It would have been nice to see more Calgary member participation in all aspects of the club needs such as setting up the course helping out at the races and taking out the course at the end of the year instead of leaving up to a small few to do most of the work.

Hope to see you all next year and I under stand there are several new Scales, Sport 21 and sport 40 as well as "A" & "B" OPC boats that are going to show up next year. We will have to wait until then to see what happens as we heard some of these roomers this year also that never came true.

Have a good winter(if that's possible) and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Don't forget to ask Santa for all those wish list boat items you want.

Keith Warham
District 16 Director.

Calgary Race Report (October 1 & 2) by Doug Sick:

Finally, 2005 racing in District 16-2 is finished.

The last race was held in Calgary and it capped off a relatively successful year. For the most part, the class winners finished with more points this year than the champions of the year before. That is due to more races in Edmonton and probably more reliable boats. Consistency is apparent by comparing total points to the best 6 of 8 races points. Our championship scoring system allows for a few races to be missed without affecting your chances of being a champ. None of the places changed when best 6 were considered.
The last race in Calgary started off on a sour note. Everybody arrived on time to wind and wind. The rain had let up but the pond was not suitable for boat racing. Most of the racers went off to coffee and came back about noon. By then the Northwest winds had backed off a bit and we ran the bigger classes that could handle some rough water. The wind slacked off more and more and finally was pretty much not a factor. We ran what we had till past 6 PM. The hardest part this time of year and that late in the day is the light. The exit of turn 2 gets pretty hard to see with the glare from the low setting sun. Just our luck the clouds broke enough to allow brilliant sun to shine off the water. I don't know what it is but the boats must be tuned for this as they seemed to die more often than not directly in the suns glare. Surprisingly enough, I don't remember anybody actually hitting a dead boat in that area in spite of numerous opportunities. The only major damage came from a C-Hydro that got lost in the sun and came across the course to the front and neatly nailed boat coming down the front straight. I think there are pictures published elsewhere of this altercation. The boat on the front straight looked not too bad from the top but when you turned it over, most of the bottom of the sponsons were missing. The turn fin tore off the one sponson bottom and the other was removed when it hit the engine of the crossing boat.

Brian and Barb hosted a fantastic Pasta dinner on Saturday night. In spite of our late finnish at the pond, there was good attendance. Great to see you all out.

Sunday was much improved. A bit cloudy and cool in the morning but generally good water conditions. We caught up with our classes for Calgary (5 heats instead of 4) and the make-ups from Edmonton. There were a lot of heats and we got through them all except for an open mono. It was getting too dark to finish the races safely.

Great racing folks this year. Hope for better next year. I see more interest out there and it looks like several new boats will be showing up next year.

Have a good winter and a successful building/rebuilding season.

Saturday/Sunday, Sept 3,4 2005 Gold Cup Report

By Rob Duckering

88 entries......Lots of bodies.......Last race of the year in Edmonton.
Thanks to all those who attended for their support and help.
Saturday started out with lots of testing until 10 am and then a drivers meeting.
First up was A-opc. Keith had a new Top-speed tunnel and K&B SS combo that was brand-new, never run.
A few teething problems but he worked on it as we raced. Toi Tran came from Saskatoon to race and had a Dumas hotshot and OS Max combination. Nice quiet little engine.
Martin Lovsund from Mackenzie B.C. brought his Villain and K&B SS powered tunnel.
Rob continued with his Leecraft and K&B SS.
Some fast times produced in this class mostly from Martin trying to chase down Rob and his Leecraft.
Rob hugged the bouys for the most part not allowing the slightly faster Villain of Martin's to get the inside which resulted in 1 heat with a 1:50 time. Not too bad for A-opc and still faster than some other times by boats in the same engine classifications.
When all was done Rob had a perfect day followed by Toi and then Keith.
A-mono had some thrilling moments but Doug Sick and one of the fastest A-monos around had a perfect day followed by Alex Lakusta And Fons Runco in second and third respectively. No one was catching Doug on this day.
Throughout the day we were able to throw a few heats of gas mono in with the nitro boats to help keep boats running and out on the water. Some great action Provided by Andy Stichenko, Sid Sali, Graham Swain, Dan Sali and Gary from Kelowna. These boats are huge and turn some of the biggest props available which results in some monster holes and troughs in the water. The crashes are amazing.
A-Hydro was up next with some very fast boats and at the end, Rob and his Eagle sg, powered by a Novarossi wound up with another perfect score and fast time at the pond, for the year, followed by Doug and then Brian from Calgary.
Sport 21 was once again able to hit the water as Martin from B.C. brought his fast little RC marine designs entry powered by a Novarossi 21. Keith from Calgary hit the water with his Bandit sport 21 with a Mac 21 while Rob ran his own design powered by a K&B 21. Some good heats were run between Keith and Martin with Martin taking the class with 1325 points followed by Keith, then at the tail end, Rob.
Next up was Sport 40. Keith entered his AC pro 40 and Mac 45, Alan Yuen with a Mutt and CMB 45, Kevin with a BBY and OS 46, Toi Tran and his AC pro 40 with OS 46 and for the first time this year, Andrew Ellwood and a Mutt with K45 power. All the boats were fast and for the first race, Andrew had a great launching hull. A small mod to the driveline straightened everything out and he was able to run all 4 heats. In the end it was Keith and his dialed in AC hull driving to a perfect score (1600 points) with Andrew in second and Toi in third.
C-mono.....What is there to say about Paul and his Muck super streaker?....It just keeps going and going, and now it has a Mac 67 for power. Paul has a lot of fun driving it and thrilling the onlookers with its flight as it literally flies on its strut, especially down the back straight into the gentle breeze.
Andrew used the old AC magnum hull and K&B, Bruce had a Microburst with Mac 67 while Brad Nichols ran a muck with an OPS 67.
Andrew won the first heat but in the second, a loose connecting rod kept the K&B from running so Paul continued on and raced to first place followed by Bruce, then Andrew.
Seven C-hydros entered this race with Rob emerging as #1 with 1400 points followed by Kevin and then Al Hobbs in third. Looks like this class may come down to the next 2 races in Calgary to determine the overall high points champ.
In G2 mono, Andy wound up with first with 1225 points followed by Gary and Sid.
GX2 mono was also won by Andy With Sid a close second and once again Gary.
These classes are also so close that the next races in Calgary will again determine the champs.

Sunday started out sunny and calm, so B-OPC was off and running. Keith had a problem with a small water hazard after winning the first 2 heats which resulted in a broken motor mount thus ending his chance for another perfect score.
In the end it was Toi running a bandit hull and old K&B 7.5 water-cooled engine at the top of the heap followed by Keith and then Paul.
Next up was the running of the Gold Cup for RC Unlimiteds. We had 5 entries this time around. Al and the Notre Dame showed good top end in the practice sessions but some square corners out on the race course showed up a few times to shut the Dame down while the others cruised on by. There were a couple of jump starts here and there as the drivers tried to get the edge and be first to the line. One heat saw Martin and his 88 Miller High Life get a good start followed by the Smokin Joes driven by Rob. It was basically a 6 lap train all the way as the Smokin Joes tried to chase down the Miller with the result being the fastest time of the year in Edmonton by Martin.
This race would finally see the Smokin Joes finish all 4 heats and take home the most sought after trophy in the district with a total of 1400 points followed by Mike and his 87 Miller and Paul with the multiple gold cup winning Atlas Van Lines.

It was during the last heat of scale that the rain started and thus it was decided to cancel the rest of the racing for the day after scale concluded. We will make up the rest of the days racing in Calgary at either their next race or the last race. Either way, lets make the last races of the year in Calgary gown down as their best of the year with improved attendance.
See you all there.....

An update!  I know - you're all saying "it's about time".  Lets just say that I have an opinion of a particular computer vendor's service...or lack thereof.

Updates will take place over the next week or so.  For today, we've got the most current district points available thanks to Doug Sick, and the most up to date Edmonton Course Records and Scale Results thanks to Rob Duckering.

The Calgary race on the 17 & 18 was cancelled due to high water conditions.  Stay tuned for more updates.  The last race of the season will be in Calgary, October 1 & 2.  There is a rumor that there will be a number of classes decided in Calgary that weekend.

July 13, 2005

Report from the NAMBA Nationals:

We finished the first day of racing A-Mono. The Westerners have not been doing well so far. Not a lot of boats but we just could not get things rolling very well. Al was testing his new Notre Dame round nose in Sport 60. Not much luck there either. Hope to have the bugs worked out by Scale next weekend.

We tackle A-Hydro tomorrow, Sunday. A friend of Al's from Switzerland has an Eagle SG knock off moulded with carbon fibre. Really light and it goes well. It's going to be busy.

It's been cloudy and damp till today when we first saw the sun. It's supposed to be hot for the rest of the week.
Really nice people here running the race. Always asking if things are going OK and can they help out.

-Have fun y'all......Doug

R/C Unlimited Winners has also been updated.

July 7, 2005

District Points have been updated to include the June 25 & 26 race in Calgary and we have two race reports from that race - one from Doug Sick and another from Rob Duckering.  Pictures here...

June 25/26 Race Report - by Doug Sick

This has to be a record in more ways than one. We have completed 4 races between Calgary and Edmonton this spring and not one heat has been lost. For Calgary, it's been even more fantastic since June has set an all time record for rain at 246 mm. Our luck seems to be that the rains come on the weekends we are off. Elliston Lake has been flooded to the top once and was running about 75% full the weekend before the last race. Unfortunately, there has been little chance to practice on the weekends so our finishing rate at the races has been low. Lots of technical glitches.

The June 25/26 was looking like it was going to be a bit wet but as it turned out, very little rain fell, only a few light showers, hardly enough to wet the ground. Mind you, wetting the ground may be hard to detect at the present time. We had a few more racers this time around but only one class added to the roster; B OPC. There was some good racing on both days with some very close finishes.

Driving skills are picking up, however there still needs to be some improvement on holding lanes (sorry about the prop tracks on your C-Hydro Brian).

Alan tried to plant Keith's S-40 in the water. Amazingly, all Keith had was a bit of red paint on the top of his canopy from the bottom of Alan's boat.

Kevin discovered sub port induction didn't work on his B-Hydro. He could not understand why his engine showed no power after lauching unsuccessfully several times. No mixture setting worked, and in fact, no mixture setting made a difference at all. At home, he discovered that he could easily view the con rod through the exhaust port when the piston was at TDC. Sub porting the exhaust has been done but not when it's a 1/4 inch gap. Kevin claims he assembled the .46 engine after he did his 3.5 hydro (opposite exhaust) and was not paying too close attention to the piston, just made sure the hole in the bottom of the con rod was facing the right direction.

Doug was not all with it either. He was all set to launch Brian's A hydro from the drivers stand. Took a left at the pits instead of a right towards the pond. Oh well, must have been on another planet.

Brian and Barb hosted a great BBQ for the racers on Saturday night. It was a bit chilly but at least it wasn't raining.

Three class records for Elliston Lake were set on the weekend. Check out the update.

Thanks all for coming out and see you all at the end of July for our straight-a-way speed testing and 2 lap time trials.
Doug, Al and Alan are going to the Nats in New Hampshire. Check on their progress (or lack of progress) at the NAMBA website. I hope they keep a daily log of the results.

-Doug Sick.

June 25/26 Race Report - by Rob Duckering

Race #4 we headed to Calgary. With the weather they have been having down there recently, you had to wonder if we could pull it off.

Started out from Edmonton with the wife and kids with sunny weather and ran into rain towards Red-Deer. It didn't look good. The closer we got to Calgary, the brighter the skies got and when we arrived at the pond, the clouds were breaking up and the weather looked good.

On with the race......Pretty good turn-out with members from Calgary and Edmonton as well as Al Hobbs from Montana. Where are the Red-Deer people? The season is 1/2 over and no boaters from that part of the province yet. Well, maybe next race...

I'm not sure of all the point tallies or who finished where so I'll leave that up to the Calgary guys to come up with a report. All I know is the weather and racing were again as good as it gets. The only result I'm sure of is that Paul Omerzu driving the Atlas finished a few heats and went home the winner of the 2005 Presidents cup as the other boats could not manage a finish with teething problems. I do remember a heat in X-hydro that was one by Bruce Blackett over Kevin by inches. Wow!...it was close...

Thanks go out to Barb and Brian Jessup for feeding my kids on Saturday night.  Even after loading up with pizza from Pizza Hut just minutes before.  Everyone else had cheeseburgers from the grill and all the fixins.

See ya in Edmonton Aug 20/21 for the Silver cup, or if you really feel daring, check out the speed trials in Calgary, July 30.

Rob

June 17, 2005

District points have been updated to reflect the June 11/12 race in Edmonton.  Several classes have tight races for top spot including C Mono where Paul and Andrew have had identical points in each of the past two races...

June 14, 2005

Race #3 of the season took place in Edmonton June 11/12. After the previous race, who would have thought we could improve the attendance, but that's what happened.  Four extra boaters from Kelowna joined us and brought with them a truckload of boats for both days.  It was good to see old friends and new faces. Thanks go out to Andy, Graham, Sid and Gary for putting on a show with some monster gas boats that leave the biggest troughs you can imagine (as Andrew found out).

We ran 2 gas classes with stock and modified engines. The modified gas boats were also entered in Open Mono where Andy from Kelowna achieved a perfect score and set fast time at the Edmonton site. Hope to see you guys in Calgary June 25/26.

We also had another visitor, Gerry Pinnsoneault from Cold Lake. Its just amazing how much equipment he can pack in a vehicle.  Gerry had an endless supply of boats, engines and parts for sale which I'm sure everyone got a piece of. Gerry was only too glad to sell to us boaters and his gesture was much appreciated. Too bad he couldn't run a boat. I'm sure if he comes to another race, some of us can lend him a boat to run.

We even had some previously un-run classes entered which included B-OPC and in total around 84 boats entered with 19 drivers. Saturday was sunny and the wind was light. Near the end of the day showers threatened from all around but never materialized until later, but by then we were either home or on the way to the Ellwoods for burgers. A big thanks to Laurel and Andrew for having us out and feeding us.

All classes were run and some great heats of racing. A couple of heats that stood out to me was one in sport 40 where Keith, Kevin and Alan raced side by side for a few laps exchanging the lead at least 3 times with each driver having the lead at one point until at the finish where Alan Yuen pulled out the win.

Another was in C-hydro with Rob getting the jump on the field and Doug chasing. Dougs boat was visibly faster but Rob drove a somewhat shorter line around the course and coming out of turn 4 to the finish held a 20 foot advantage which Doug made up and almost won the heat at the line. Neither one of us new who won, it was as close as it gets.

Sunday brought cloudy skies and cooler weather. All the B classes were run as well as X classes and scale.
5 boats entered unlimited hydro with the 82 Atlas (Paul), 87 Miller American (Mike), 88 Miller High Life (Martin), 94 Smokin' Joes (Rob) and Al Hobbs and the Miss US.

Heat one was won by the Smokin' Joes with the Atlas chasing. Heat 2 was won by the 88 Miller with the Atlas again chasing after the Joe went dead. Heat 3 saw the Smokin' Joe win followed by Paul and the Atlas. Heat 4 was the run for the Governors cup with the Atlas having accumulating 900 points, Smokin' Joe at 800, 87 miller (Mike) at 675, 88 Miller at 450 (Martin) followed by Al with 225.

All boats started and before the gun the Smokin' Joe was dead in the water, which left the Atlas and the 2 Miller boats to run for the trophy. Martin and the Miller got the jump and led the first lap with the Atlas chasing hard with Mike and the Miller American at the back. Lap 2 saw a drive dog set screw come loose on the Atlas ending his race with the Miller of Mike Lakusta taking over second place. At the end it was Martin winning the heat with Mike and the Miller American finishing second.

So, the points ended up as follows, Mike and the 87 Miller American winning its first race of the year with 975 points, Paul and the Atlas (down one set-screw) with 925 in second, Martin and the Miller High Life in 3rd with 850, Smokin' Joes (leaky needle) with 800 and Al and the Miss Us with 250.

Just goes to show, finish all your heats and you are there at the end.  Congratulations Mike!

We would also like to thank Fons and Brad and Andrew for their work on the contest directors stand doing the thankless job of keeping track of all the heats and boats.

Also, note that a few more course records were set on the weekend.

See you all in Calgary for the Presidents cup, June 25/26

Several updates for today:

Race Results and district points are updated.

Updated pictures from the last Edmonton Race here.

Rob Duckering has put together a Table that will contain the R/C Unlimited winners from the past several years.  So far, we just have this year's events, but we're combing through the archives to discover the rest - click here.

REPORT ON OPC DISTRICT 16 - by Keith Warham

After a lapse of some 5 years "A" OPC has come to light again with the running of our first class in Edmonton last week end. We had 3 entries for the first race from Keith, Rob and Martin from Prince George B.C.  Rob took first place with his Leecraft, Keith was second with a bandit boat and Martin was third with his Villain.  Water conditions were not to bad for the little boat and fun was had by all.  I know there are a few more "A" OPC boats out there so lets get them out guy's and have some fun.

For the second race of the year we did not have enough "B" OPC boats to run a class so hopefully some of you delinquent B boat guys will show up at the next race in Edmonton next week end.   --Keith--

Edmonton Race Report: - By Rob Duckering

Race #2 on the schedule took place in Edmonton with one of the best turnouts of people and boats of the last few years.  Al Hobbs from Great Falls and Martin Lovsund from Mackenzie B.C. traveled the furthest and brought a good number of entries with them.  A first for district 16 was the running of the new sport 21 class.  Very impressive little boats with heat times that rival their sport 40 counterparts. Look for this class to continue to grow.  Also running for the first time in a while was A-OPC.

Saturday was warm and sunny with light winds which made for some great racing action. We were visited by a representative of the City of Edmonton and by all accounts we were received quite well.  Time will tell on this one as Fons will work with the city to see what improvements we can have done to make the site a safer place to race.  Some of the rocks on the edge pose a hazard to launching and also to boats either driven wide or with low batteries as experienced by Alan Yuen and Al Hobbs.  Overall, I think the new site will be ok and we will continue to improve the conditions.

Sunday saw very high winds and at our old pond would have been impossible to run on. The water did get rough at times but at least we were able to race and get this one in. We also recorded the fast times and like Calgary, we will continue to update.   Embra course records  Calgary course records

This race was the Seafair race for RC Unlimiteds and had 6 boats entered.  Mike Lakusta's new Miller boat made its first race and ran very nice until an incident with the dead in the water Smokin' Joes took both boats out.  Also in its first race was Martins canopy version of the Miller High Life.  It came down to the last heat with Martin's new Miller in control over Paul's Atlas Van Lines until Martin cut a buoy thus allowing Paul to squeak in an extra 75 points overall and claim the 2005 Seafair trophy.

Pictures of the race are here...

Next race is in Edmonton June 11-12 for the Governors Cup and we look forward to seeing you all there.  Andrew and Laurel will be hosting a get together at their home Saturday night.

Till then......Rob

Calgary Race Report: - By Doug Sick

As usual, the first race was rather sparsely attended with a handful of Calgary members, Al Hobbs and two EMBRA members. Thanks to Perry M and Russ E for coming out anyway to help out with the race even though they don't have any boats ready. A big thanks has to go to Brian Jessup who in spite of his recent difficulties, showed up to CD and race his full complement of boats. You can't get more dedicated than that.

If you didn't come, you missed a great race, which is unusual at least for Calgary. Normally, the Spring is very windy and/or rainy so we rarely get in a full weekend. This time, the weather was great, the wind was minimal and the sun shone brightly, as my sunburn can attest. Also, in spite of the long winter lay off, most of the boats seemed to be in good form with only a few not able to run.

Kevin T picked up where he left off last year and doing a nice job on the internals of his S-40 Picco engine. After some checking of the systems, he discovered his new S-40 had no way for the water to get through the rudder and he was running without any cooling.

Everybody kept off the rocks which is always very good. Must have stocked up with new batteries over the winter. Rob D took a lot of pictures for the District website. Take a look and see if you recognize anybody new. Pictures here...

I am keeping a record list for heat racing at Elliston Lake. I started it last year with the change to the new 1 mile 6 lap course so it is relatively new. You will note that two records were set in the May 14/15 race so we are certainly up to speed. Several of the best times were only a few seconds off the records.

Remember the first Edmonton race this coming weekend. Bruce Blackett is taking entries. We have a new lake to break in. Details are on the District website. This is a probationary lake for now and depending on how we do, it may become permanent. By all reports, it should be a good place to race with little in the way of nearby residents, good access and less chance of the water going rough with the wind. Just have to see how the pond develops over the summer. It's a run-off pond like Calgary so we will have to deal with variable water levels and likely weed growth. Hope to see you there.

Doug

May 22, 2005

OK - so it's almost time for the first Edmonton race of the year.  Remember - we are at the new pond for this race - map found here.

Bruce Blackett is taking registrations again this year - I know he would love to hear from you by Wednesday evening with your classes and frequencies.

We just finished setting the course at the new pond.  We were able to fun a rope to the far side of the pond - the result is that the course is as straight as any we've ever put in the water.  Better than that, it took very little time compared to the course at Kirk Lake.

The pit area for this race will be dirt.  The pond has yet to be seeded for grass, although I'm sure that is coming soon.  We are hoping to have an official from the City of Edmonton come down and observe us at this race, with the hope of this becoming our permanent home.  Let's make sure we give them a good show!

See you at the pond! - Andrew

Sport Report - by Rob Duckering:

May 14/15 in Calgary. The weather was awesome. The turnout was light. The racing was great, for the first race of the year.

Since this is just a report on sport boats, I will only comment on Sport 40 and Unlimited.

Sport 40 was run on Saturday with 3 boats and their drivers attending.  Keith Warham, Alan Yuen and Kevin Trabourley. Since I was not running this class this year, I was able to dedicate time to taking pictures and watching the action; and wow, what action there was for just 3 boats.  Keith has his MAC 45 powered AC pro 40 running as fast as I have ever seen it, and it had to be said that Alan Yuen with a CMB 45RS powered Mutt II was equally as fast.  They had one heat where they ran within 20-40 feet of each other for the full 6 laps. Kevin had a few engine problems here and there but once running, was a threat to challenge for top spot. See the race results section for point totals in this class.

Sunday saw 3 Unlimited scales take to the water.  Paul Omerzu driving the Picco powered  Atlas Van Lines, Rob Duckering and the Smokin' Joes, as well as Al Hobbs with the Notre Dame dropped sponson roundnose.  Testing began in the morning with Al dropping the Notre Dame in the water for the first time in 10 years with a Kalastratov 67 providing the push.  He was tickled to say the least, when it ran like it had been running all along, ready to race, and fast too....
3 boats entered all 4 heats with the Smokin' Joes having mixture problems in the first 2 heats and sat dead in the water as Al and Paul duked it out. Finally in the 3rd heat all 3 boats ran and finished the heat with the Atlas on top. The cowling came loose on the Joe and provided an obstacle at the apex of turn 3, 4 but luckily no one hit it and all boats returned to the pits with no prop damage. (Thanks guys). Heat 4 saw the Smokin' Joes finally get its act together and win the final heat but its day was done as you need to finish all your heats to get to the top. The Thunderboat Cup goes to Paul and the Atlas this day with second to Al and the Notre Dame.  Again, see race results for the point totals.

This was the first heats of unlimited racing in Calgary since the 2000 Canadian Nationals and I see no reason for scale racing to not continue. Hopefully with a few more boats getting finished and tested, we can expand this class for the remainder of the season.

See you all in Edmonton for the first race on our new pond May 28/29.  ---  Rob  ---

May 2, 2005

It's just about boating season!  I know that the guys in Calgary have been out testing already...someone sent me some pictures!

The Edmonton club has a line on a new pond!  Great news for all that race in Edmonton as it's relatively wind sheltered, there are only industrial neighbors, there will be great exposure from drive by traffic.  The City has agreed to let us race there for the first race this year - they will stop by and check us out that weekend.  The new pond is a storm drainage pond just off the Whitemud Freeway at 50 Street - just North of the new Leons furniture store.  Map is found here.  For those who drive in from the south, this is going to be a fairly large time saver as it's close to Calgary Trail on the south side of Edmonton.  There are a bunch of hotels on Calgary Trail, or alternatively a couple of new ones in Sherwood Park that are quite reasonable.  Call Andrew if you need assistance in that area.

Thanks to all who have recently sent pictures.  See a bunch of new stuff here:

District 16, Region 2 Hydro Report

-by Kevin Traboulay

So this year, as always, the hydro classes will be one of the largest out there.

News from the pits is Doug's new Eagle SGX .21 as he gave up on his scratch built hydro from last year which he just did not have the time to work out the bugs. Brian J is, as usual, running his own design and will be running at the top.  It will be interesting to see how A hydro pans out as Brain's A was the fastest by far last year and if he can keep her on the pipe he will be hard to beat.  I myself am running an older version Eagle SG acquired from Russ Engleman.

Kyle Saunders is again going to test the waters in Mongoose 67/80 hull running a CMB or Mac .67. In his first go at it he racked up some casualties, But his driving skills have greatly improved and will be ready to go.

Richard Sacher will be running again this year in B hydro trim and we're all glad to see the Red Dear guys getting out to Calgary.  Lets hope they find a permanent racing spot to practice at and for us to come to their neck of the woods to play.

If you checked the Edmonton's site you'll see Mike K has been super hard at work building new hydros and YES even an A hydro.  Al Hobbs will bring out the usual assortment of super fast Eagles to stir up the water.  I myself have almost finished the re-build of my X Jaguar after an unfortunate mishap with another boater.  After a brief but truly missed absence from racing Rob D is entering two classes and will be running some of Doug's old hulls powered by Mac's in A and C hydro.  Welcome back Rob.

More to come as those of you in secret mode reveal your winter projects.

District 16, Region 2 Scale and Sport Report

- by Rob Duckering

Scale hydro has seen a rekindling of interest in District 16 this year with the possibility of some scales hitting the water hopefully at all races this year.

Paul Omerzu will be out with the 1988 U-00 Miller High life with a Picco 67 for power.  This boat has won numerous races and will be a major player.

Next is Martin Lovsund from northern B.C. who says he will make it to 6 or so races this year driving another version of the 1988 Miller high life but with the fully enclosed cockpit with U # 31. His boat is powered by a CMB greenhead 67.

Also returning this year after taking last year off is Rob Duckering driving a boat bought off ebay from Don Ferrette. The 1994 U-10 Smokin Joes powered by a Picco bluehead.

Next is Al Hobbs driving one of his Notre Dame hulls with the nod most likely to the 1969 roundnose version.

From Calgary we have Kevin Trabouley and a Circus Circus hull.

Also in the running should be Mike Lakusta and a beautiful 1987 Miller American canopy version which was just finished last year.

Some other notables are Andrew Ellwood and the 1990 Winston Eagle which should hit the water near mid-season. Look for that hull to be Kalistratov powered.

I have also heard of another hull in Calgary being built by Kelly Cunningham.  Maybe after a race or two we can generate some real interest in this class again, because when you think about it, they are priced right in there with the competitive rigger designs currently running. Not only that, they are bigger and easier to see for some of us that are getting on in years....

Sport 40 looks to be a hotly contested class with some older but proven boats from years gone by and some new entries. Keith Warham returns with an AC Pro 40 powered by a Mac 45.  Look for this boat to be running near the front this year.  Also returning will be Andrew and his Mutt II powered by a K engine.  This boat could be the one to win it all if Andrew can put a string of races together.  A new player this year is Alan Yuen from Calgary also driving a Mutt II hull powered by a CMB engine.  Should be interesting to watch this one.  Perry Mador will be running his AC Pro 40 with a Mac, Kevin T has a Winston Lobster hull, and Jim Smith has another AC Pro 40 hull with a few others yet to be determined.

Sport 20 looks to be finally on the water this year. Martin Lovsund has an RC Marine Design hull powered by a Nova Rossi engine and is just being finished at this time.  Rob Duckering has a new scratch built with a K&B 3.5 drum engine all painted and almost ready.  Keith Warham will have a new Bandit hull with his own design cowl and a Mac 21 ready.  Gerald Melanson, Perry Mador and Richard Sacher from Red-Deer round out the field.  The first race should be interesting as I'm sure there will be a lot of untested boats hitting the water for the first time.

So, there it is.....the first sport report from district 16.  Next one will be right after the first race where I'll report on how the results ended up and who looks to be the strongest for the upcoming year, as well as any late additions to the field and how they look. Any more info that anyone can provide is welcomed. Pictures of progress is a big plus as well.

Rob Duckering.

Minutes of the Red Deer Meeting (1:45pm Saturday March 12, 2005 - North Hill Inn).

Meeting called to order at 1:45pm by Keith Warham.

Minutes of the 2004 meeting were read by Kevin.

Accepted by Perry Mador, Seconded by Bruce Blackett.

District Director Keith Warham's comments:

Thanks to all for participated last year.

District logo decals and patches will be produced in Calgary this year and are available immediately from Keith.  Shirts are also being produced in Calgary and are available with no minimum quantity.

High Points - do we want shirts for next year?  A brief discussion ensued - final decision is yes

Teams for this year?  Participation was low last year but most saw that as a result of the problems that Edmonton had with the pond.  The decision was made to keep them for this year and we'll re-evaluate next year.

Question for Al - decals for Namba?  Suggested that this is a task for the NAMBA V.P.  Elections are this year and there is a rumor that Keith Warham might just run if we can talk him into it.  Then we'll get NAMBA decals!!

Al indicated Namba web site is undergoing change - the company that maintains it has been dismissed and there are tenders out for maintaining it.

Keith is looking for contributions for the NAMBA newsletter.  Rob suggested that individuals be appointed to cover the class categories (Mono, Hydro, Scale/Sport20/40, Outboard).  Rob has volunteered to write contributions for Scale, Kevin will write up Hydro, Kyle will write the Mono articles and Keith will take care of OPC.

Race dates have been posted on the web site.

Red Deer report:  Richard Sacher reported that there is an on-going struggle for a pond in the Red Deer area.  Wolf Creek Inn site has some access issues that would need to be rectified before we can race there.  Three Mile Bend pond is too small for a race course.  Richard will keep us updated.

Calgary Report:  Kevin asked about the 6 lap course?  They will use 5 bouys instead of last year's 3 bouy course.  Doug is producing fuel again this year.  Glow plugs - MC-9s ($2.60/plug) and Merlin plugs ($2.00/plug) are available.  April 15th deadline to contact Kevin for plugs.  Al also has K&B high performance plugs but has limited supplies.

Signs for races - advertising and pit area warning signs will be developed for the Calgary pond along with more aggressive use of ropes and signs to keep non-members out of the pit area during races.

The City of Calgary has a Fireworks show that is run at the pond - and the Calgary club will probably be invited to run again this year.  If so, all are invited to run your boats and enjoy the fireworks.  This is great exposure for the hobby and the more participation we get, the better.  The Calgary club will keep us informed.

Edmonton report:  Pond issues - short version is that the politicians are trying to decide who will run the pond this year.  This remains an open discussion that should have some decisions made by the middle of April.  Other ponds in the city will have similar political consequences.

New classes for this year will be Sport 21, more scales etc.

Al Hobbs report:  New insurance form from Al to satisfy the City of Calgary's insurance requirements was presented to Keith.

2005 Namba Nats in New Hampshire - small group from Alberta is headed that direction this year.

This is Al's last year as NAMBA president.  We're trying to get Keith to run for Vice President...

Al raced in Australia over Christmas.  They are interested in joining NAMBA, but the insurance may be an issue.

Travellers is the insurance company of choice for NAMBA.

IMPBA will no longer produce a newsletter.  IMPBA's information will be available on the web site only.

Doug Sick's fuel report:  Fuel prices $25/gallon for 40%, $29/gallon for 50%, $32/gallon for 60% - all prices for 5 gallon quantities at one time - you provide the containers.

Keith presented the high points shirts:

Alan Yuen - A Mono and B Mono

Doug Sick - B Hydro and C Hydro

Bruce Blackett - A Hydro

Brian Jessup - X Hydro

Rob Duckering Adjourned the meeting at 2:45pm - seconded by Bruce Blackett.

February 23, 2005

It's been a while...and quite a bit has happened!

Firstly, a tentative race schedule has been posted under the Race Dates menu option - or by clicking here.

Edmonton's pond situation has gone through several iterations - without all of the gory details it looks like control of Kirk Lake has been transferred back to the City of Edmonton.  Initial conversations with them seem very positive.  Details will be available at the Red Deer meeting.

Oh yeah - that reminds me - the annual Red Deer meeting will be at the usual North Hill Inn @ 2:00PM on Saturday, March 12, 2005.

The Edmonton club participated in a static display at Bonnie Doon Mall on Family Day - pictures below courtesy of Rob Duckering.

There are also a number of new pictures in the Edmonton Shop Gallery section - Rob's new Sport 21 and Some more pictures from Mike Kurz.

Scale seems to have re-emerged as a popular class in Edmonton.  Rob has a new Smokin' Joes, Paul is working on the Miller High Life, Andrew is making steady headway on the 1992 Winston Eagle and Mike will probably have his Miller American done for the season.  Al is also rumored to have a new scale boat.  Should be fun...

Doug Sick has produced a page of Historical District 16 - Region 2 class champions since 1996 - check it out here...

Mike Kurz has sent some new pictures of his new 21 hydro - look here...

Sept 5, 2004

Well Saturday was nice...Sunday the wind got us from the North West - and it was impossible to run in the waves.  The turnout was small, but we had a great deal of fun.  Richard from the Red Deer club showed up to give us a hand.  I actually think he came to watch, but we conscripted him as we needed one more person in order to run four boat heats.  Racing was done by 3pm!

Thanks so much to Bruce and Lana who hosted a wonderful dinner at their house Saturday evening.

Next race - Crazy Al's in Kalispell, Montana on September 17, 18 & 19.

Sept 2, 2004

The weatherman is still not sure of the weekend weather.  Right now it's very unstable, but they are saying there's a chance of good boating weather on the weekend.  Check the Edmonton weather forecast - click here.

Sept 1, 2004

It looks like the Edmonton Club will be able to host a race on the Labor Day weekend.  There was some activity at the old pond (Kirk Lake) on Tuesday evening, and if the weather permits, we'll be racing on the weekend.  Please register with Bruce Blackett ASAP.  For those attending please note that construction of the overpass on 184 street is more or less complete.  Go North of the Yellowhead on 184 street and make your first left and then follow the road around.

June 22, 2004 (from Doug in Calgary)

Not much was accomplished at the last Calgary race.  We got in some classes on then the wind hit us.  Normally a South wind is not too bad for us but this time it kicked up pretty good due to some thunderstorm activity in the area.  On Sunday, we started off an hour early and got in a make up Sport 40 from the May 1-2 weekend and a couple of X Hydro classes before the thunderstorm hit.  That put us out of action as the rain was pretty solid for the rest of the day.

For our June 28 29 race, we will try to make up all the Sunday classes we lost at the last race, after we finish the A and C classes.  That would make it almost a full weekend of racing in one day.  If the weather is nice, we will push the time to 6 PM before we call it quits.  On Sunday, we will run the normal B and C classes and any we missed from Saturday.

District Points have been updated...follow the link on the menu.

May 14, 2004

The Edmonton race on May 15 and 16 will be held at Muir Lake - north of Stony Plain - click here for a map...

May 10, 2004 (from Doug in Calgary)

Hey folks, it's the start of a new year.  Calgary has held it's first race.  It was thinly attended but we did manage to put some classes together.  Saturday was a glorious day to test our new course.  Sunday started out not too bad but a Chinook wind blew in half way through B-Hydro.  X-Hydro was not going to work with the big waves so we will try to pick it up later.

The new course proved to be a challenge to some.  It's much narrower and a bit shorter.  It took a while to get the new start timing down.  Quite a few jump starts.  The three bouy corner was a problem for the boats that have good turning ability.  The tendency is to cut off the corners a bit where the extra buoy is missing.  We will continue to assess the situation.  We will be moving the course out for the next race to give another 5 ft of room in the straights.  There is plenty of room on the back now so we can afford to give a bit more space for the front straights.

Edmonton will be hosting next weekend.  I hear that Fons is taking entries.  Please get your entries in to him by Wednesday evening.  For those that will be staying over Saturday night, I think we will try to make the Ramada in Stony Plain our headquarters.  Keith can tell you more about the place.

Yours truly has been distracted - this update is a couple of weeks late...

                                            DISTRICT 16 REGION 2

ANNUAL MEETING

RED DEER MARCH 13/04

Keith called the meeting to order at 1:35.

13 members in attendance and 4 prospective members from Red Deer

Kevin read the minutes from 2003. Adopted as read by Bruce Blackett, seconded by Brian Jessup

Team concept to stay same as previous years, may have to put 3 on a team depending on participation

Keith voiced concern with the hassles with the shirts this year. Had a hard time getting a consensus on color for all.

Keith mentioned the Calgary Company who did the embroidering was reasonable and that they would do any number for us where as the Edmonton Company  requires a minimum of 12.

To change companies there would be a set up fee of approximately $100 and Keith asked the Calgary and Edmonton club if they would agree to split the cost if we decide to change. Both clubs agreed.

Keith also mentioned the cost of shirts appear to be increasing next year, the exact amount is not known.

New District Decals are now available in 2” and 3” sizes. See Keith if you wont any.

This is an even year so District Director ship is up, so any one interested in running for the position submit their name by Sept 1/04 to NAMBA as per the rule book.

The race dates have been finalized for 2004:

            May 1& 2  Calgary

            May 15 & 16  Edmonton

            May 29 & 30  Calgary

            June 12 & 13  Edmonton

June 26 & 27  Calgary

Aug. 21 & 22  Edmonton

Sept. 4 & 5    Edmonton

Sept. 17 & 18 & 19 Crazy Al’s Race Kalispell Montana

Sept. 25 & 26  Calgary

Oct 2 & 3  Make up week end for any lost events either Calgary or Edmonton or both.

The Edmonton club has the use of Muir Lake at Stony Plain again this year and Fons indicated they also have Kirk Lake that could be used as well for racing or practice. Perry mentioned the Municipality will be doing some up grades for us at the lake.

They also talked about the blackout period during the NAMBA Nats that causes us a loss of about 3 weeks of possible races.

Al Hobbs, NAMBA President indicated we could run races during that time but would not receive a sanction and no points could be awarded. It would be mostly a fun run.

Calgary suggested we go to a 1 mile 6 lap course. After much discussion on the size of the course a motion was made by Bruce Blackett to go with the 1 mile 6 lap course with the size left up to each club depending what fits their situation best, seconded by Brian Jessup. Passed.

Doug Sick  also indicated we should be more diligent on controlling noise and suggested the Db meters be used at all races. Max Db 92.

Al Hobbs discussed insurance and our excellent record. Namba is now with Traveler Insurance and there is no increase in membership cost this year.

NAMBA continues to grow with approximately 1500 members at present. He also indicated NAMBA would continue to reimburse Calgary for their additional insurance. He is still trying to locate a Travelers agent willing to take us on in Canada. May take time this year to visit agents in Calgary this summer to see what can be done.

Richard Sacher indicated they have 7 people interested in joining Namba and will be starting a club and registering it with NAMBA. He also indicated there were a couple of possibilities for race sites and more information would follow.

A couple the guys visited Wolf Creek resort just north of Red Deer to see if the owner would be interested in letting us race on their pond. He appeared extremely positive of the request and said he would check with his neighbors to see if there would be any problems.

Water fowl us it in the spring and late August so we would have to utilize it during the summer months. The motel looks good and has a restaurant.

Richard will keep us advised on the future use of the area.

Russ moved we adjourn the meeting seconded by Fons.

District Points updated for Alberta and Manitoba regions.

Race report from the Labour Day race in  Edmonton - The Gold Cup:

The weather was great.  Thanks to everyone for helping out. Thanks to Gerry for the electric motor for the retrieve boat.  Thanks Mike Kurz, Perry Sorenson, Art and Doug for the batteries.  Some great racing.  B-opc had some 3 boat deck to deck racing that we haven't had for a few years.  Rob and Paul tangled in turn 4 in scale that resembled the real deal with Rob's Such Crust sliding under Paul's Atlas Van Lines which got Paul airborne but coming back down to win the heat. Saturday was a long day with running until about 8 pm but Sunday we cut it short as people wanted to go home.  So only A-mono and A-hydro were made up from a previous Edmonton race. We will see what everyone thinks about another make-up race in the future. Next race is in Calgary - Sept 13-14.

July 6, 2003

Updated district points posted.  Updated Calgary and Winnipeg photo galleries.

Calgary Race Report (June 28 & 29) from Rob Duckering:  The weather was perfect. Wind from the south so, smooth water. Excellent racing both days. Saturday- Ran the make-up of B-opc from Calgary's last race.  Fun racing.  Bill Gawley from Winnipeg won the c-hydro class and since this was Calgary's feature race 3 plaques were given out to the top 3 in c-hydro. So, Bill #1, Doug #2, Brian Jessup #3. Sunday we ran B-opc, B-mono, B-hydro, Open mono and x-hydro. I won B-opc with a perfect score. Really good racing in B-mono with Keith winning. B-hydro was Doug's class as he got 1600 points. Open mono was won by Alan Yuen and his Seaducer. It is really dialed in and running fast. I put the Mac 84 in the Eagle and it worked great. Made some strut changes from what I learned with the 67 and held off Alan Yuens cmb 1.00 for 3 laps before going a bit lean. What a great driving boat. Finished 2nd twice, one 3rd and won my last heat.  Doug won the class (I believe) as his Eagle with the new K-84 was running fast. I took lots of pictures. The party on Saturday night was hosted by Brian and Barb Jessup - the burgers were some of the best I have ever had. Great turn out.

June 9, 2003

District 16 region 2 (Alberta) results posted for the first race of the year.  New updates will be posted that include the June 7th & 8th race very shortly.

The race in Calgary on the weekend was great - except for Sunday's weather.  Saturday was warm and sunny with a slight breeze from the south, and the racing was pretty good.  There were some very fast new boats on the scene and some that had some teething problems that should be good once they are all sorted out.  Sunday saw a fairly brisk wind from the northwest (bad for the Calgary pond) but the racers threw their boats in anyway and there were some very good heats with surprisingly little recovery needed.  Doug Sick hosted a get together on Saturday evening and as usual it was a really nice evening.  Thanks again Doug and Jennifer!

Next race is June 21 in Edmonton if we can get access to the pit area (darn beavers...)  Hopefully see you all in Edmonton.

May 30, 2003

New merchandise available!  Decals in two sizes so far...check the merchandise page.

May 22, 2003

In preparation for the first Edmonton race of the year, there will be a work bee at the pond at 10:00am on Saturday, June 14.  We have a great deal of work to do repairing the drivers stand and setting the course so if you can spare a hand, it would be very much appreciated.

There will be a barbeque on Saturday evening June 21st.  Contact Andrew for details...

May 15, 2003

This weekend's scheduled race in Edmonton has been cancelled due to flooding conditions in the pit area.  Stay tuned for re-scheduling information.

May 11, 2003

This has been a tough year to get the first race of the season into the water...

We'll have to see if we can get some help from the City or Province to lower the water level a bit before next weekend.  For more pictures click here.

May 3, 2003

Mother nature strikes again.  The snow last weekend and the prospect of more for this weekend has caused the Calgary race scheduled for this weekend to be postponed until the weekend of May 24/25.  Edmonton will host the first race of the year on the Victoria Day weekend - May 17 and 18th.  Let's hope for warmer weather, sunny skies, and no wind!

April 26, 2003

Bernie Little, long time owner of the full sized Miss Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane racing team, passed away this weekend.  He will be missed.  His contributions to the world of boat racing in general have trickled down to our hobby in more ways than we can imagine.  Godspeed Bernie.

The first Region 2 (Alberta) race is almost upon us!  It's just above freezing and the wind is howling as I write this, but as the old saying goes - If you don't like the weather in Alberta - wait a minute.  I hope that the weather in Calgary next weekend will be a bit better.

Please make sure that you call Brian Jessup before Wednesday evening with your race entries!  It's promising to be a great year of racing and last year's points were hotly contested.  Don't forget if you want to be a part of the Team Event for this year, please let Brian know even if you can't make the Calgary race on May 3rd.

April 13, 2003
