All About Us: The Calgary R/C Boat Club started in the early 70's with the first race being held in 1972; some 30 years and 4 race sites later it's still going strong. Instrumental in starting the club were Brian Jessup, Stu Seymour, Gary Jeffery and Doug Sick, most of who are still involved today! As the years rolled by the name THE BUOY BUSTERS was decided upon and in 1977 the club registered as a NON-PROFIT society in Alberta. After several years of being referred to as "The Booby Busters", "Boy Busters" and other variations it was decided a name change was in order. Thus the CALGARY MODEL BOAT RACING ASSOCIATION (CMBRA) was born! The club is now an International member of the North American Model Boat Racing Association, with all of Canada being designated "District 16" and most of the activity taking place in the western provinces. Namba sets the standards by which we govern our activities and also provides excellent umbrella insurance coverage for all its members.
Each
year the club hosts 3 or 4 NAMBA sanctioned races between May and October.
Races are also held in Edmonton and Winnipeg to which a few of our members
travel to on a regular basis. Members of the other Canadian clubs (and
some from the U.S.!) often make the trek to Calgary for our races too! The club holds meetings on the 1st Thursday of each month at the homes of various club members. Holding meetings at the homes of club members allows everyone a chance to see the workshops of fellow R/C boaters and find out what is going on behind the scenes. New or prospective members are always welcome to attend these meetings and find out who we are and what we are all about. Membership fees are presently $85.00 per year; NAMBA dues included.
On any
given Sunday during the summer you can find us at our Elliston Park race
site located at the South West corner of 17th Ave. and 68th St. in South
East Calgary. (See map) Parking is available off of 68th St. and a short
walk to the south will bring you to the boating site!
